About the University
As the flagship of the state university system, the University of Maryland is the largest public research university in the state and one of the Top 20 public research universities in the nation. We attract a large and growing number of top students; provide many services for businesses, government agencies and other important members of the community; and are a committed partner in ongoing community development initiatives.

Celebrating 150 years, we are heavily invested in the long-term future of the community and the region, as evidenced by the development of the state’s largest university-related research park and plans for a centrally-located mixed-use project on East Campus.

Our daytime population of 46,690 includes 35,370 students, 9,820 employees and 1,500 visitors. Located in the city of College Park (population 25,000), we are five miles from Washington, D.C., and 25 miles from Baltimore. Full Size

The university is highly accessible, with Interstates 95 and 495 (the Capital Beltway) two miles away and three major roads directly serving the campus. The College Park/University of Maryland Metro station is less than a mile from the University and is served by Shuttle UM.
